The Urban Vinyl scene is growing and growing and a lot of artists around the world are showing us their creations, now I´m interviewing one of those phenomenal creative minds, his name is Huck Gee and he is one of the most sought-after toy artists in the game right now. Hello Huck the first thing that I want to say is thanks for spending some time answering this questions, now please introduce yourself to our readers My name is Huck, it’s like fuck but with an H. Tell me 3 words to describe your art Cute, sexy, and badass. Which are your main influences? My influences are vast. The main influences affecting my work these days are probably found in traditional Japanese watercolors, modern Japanese and HK pop art, US comic book artists, and a healthy dose of graffiti culture. Does the asian influence that we see in your work heredity or just a simple style? Definitely not hereditary. Ha! I’ve been downright obsessive with Japanese history and culture for decades but it wasn’t until the last few years that I started delving into other Asian cultures. Found some rather inspiring motives when on my most recent trip through Hong Kong, China and the Philippines. How does it feel to become one of the most sought-after artists in the toy scene? Humbling and gratifying. Which are the things or situations that inspire you? Anything and everything can be inspirational. I think that has more to do with my own state of mind when I’m out and about. I could walk through the SF MOMA and feel nothing, yet walk outside and see something in the curvature of a light post. Inspiration can surprise you. In which time of your life did you heard the call of art? I was drawing most of my childhood and early teens but it wasn’t until I stumbled into graffiti in my late teens that I really felt passionate about anything. What´s the message that you want to transmit with your art? Hmmm... No hidden message there. If anything I suppose I hope to inspire others. What do you love and what do you detest? I love a good sandwich and detest haters. The music that inspires you is... Everything. I listen to everything from house, hip hop, and soul to soundtracks, bluegrass, and booty bass, to name a few. In what are you working at this moment? The question should be “what aren’t I working on?” I am swamped. Working on custom toy sets, new production figures, a clothing line or 2, and answering this interview. ;) In your opinion what´s the roll that the urban vinyl is playing in this society? In society? Shit, I hope we’re shaking things up a bit as to what art is and isn’t. How do you see the underground culture in Mexico? I’ve seen some really good artists coming out of Mexico. Really dug the folks that were involved with the Azteca Dunny series. Top 5 Toys My tastes change so often, and there’s so much amazing talent out there that I don’t really do top lists. No matter who/what I picked, I’d feel like I was leaving somebody out. What´s the next toy project and Where do you see yourself in a future? Got a bunch of new and really exciting stuff in the works with Kidrobot. And hopefully chilling on a beach somewhere in SouthEast Asia. :D What´s the first thing that comes into your mind when I say: The City Loves you? Does it use protection? Mi nombre es Huck, es como Fuck pero con una H. 3 palabras para describir tu arte son.. ¿Cuáles son tus principales influencias? ¿La influencia asiática que vemos en tu trabajo es una herencia o simplemente un mero estilo? Definitivamente no es hereditario. ¡Ha! He sido realmente obsesivo con la historia y cultura japonesa por décadas pero no fue hasta los últimos años que comencé a cavar en otras culturas asiáticas. Encontré algunos motivos algo inspirantes en mi viaje más reciente a Hong Kong, China y las Filipinas. ¿Qué sientes al convertirte en unos de los artistas más cotizados dentro de la escena del juguete? humillante y gratificante. ¿Cuáles son las cosas o las situaciones que te inspiran? Cualquier cosa, todo puede ser inspiracional. Pienso que tiene más que ver con mi propio estado de la mente cuando estoy fuera. Puedo caminar dentro del MOMA (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo)de San Francisco y no sentir nada, y salir y ver algo en un poste de luz. La inspiración puede sorprenderte. ¿En qué momento de tu vida escuchaste el llamado del arte? ¿Cuál es el mensaje que deseas transmitir con tu arte? Hmmm… Ningún mensaje oculto allí. Si hubiera alguno, espero que este inspire a otros. ¿Qué amas y que detestas? Amo un buen emparedado y detesto a los haters. La música que te inspira es… Todo. Escucho todo desde house, hip-hop, soul, Soundtracks, bluegrass y booty bass, por nombrar algunos. ¿En qué estas trabajando en este momento? La pregunta debe ser “¿En que no estoy trabajando ahora?” estoy hundido. Trabajando en sets de custom Toys, nuevas figuras de producción, una línea o 2 de ropa, y contestando esta entrevista. ;) ¿En tu opinión, cuál es el papél que juega el Urban Vinyl dentro de la sociedad? ¿En sociedad? Mierda, espero que estemos sacudiendo las cosas un poco, en cuanto a qué es y qué no es el arte. ¿Cómo ves la cultura subterránea en México? He visto a algunos artistas realmente buenos salir de México. Realmente cavó a la gente que estuvo implicada en la serie del Dunny Azteca. Tu top 5 de juguetes… Cambio de gustos muy a menudo, y hay tanto talento sorprendente que realmente no quisiera hacer una lista. No importa quién o qué escogí, yo sentiría que dejo a alguien fuera. ¿Cuál es el siguiente proyecto hablando de juguetes y donde te ves en un futuro? Un manojo de nuevas cosas y realmente emocionantes con Kidrobot.
