1. Es la primera vez que van a visitar México?

Si, estuvimos a punto de presentarnos en México el año pasado en el Festival Sonorama, pero el show fue cancelado a ultima hora por problemas de organización, estábamos tan decepcionados como la audiencia... así que ahora estamos felices de poder presentarnos en vivo.

2. Como se conocieron?

Nos conocimos en la preparatoria, Gaetan y Vincent estaban en la misma escuela, yo conocí a Gaetan en una fiesta, nos volvimos amigos, empezamos a hacer música y a pasar el tiempo juntos, Fuimos a la universidad en diferentes lugares, pero seguíamos tocando en el garage de Gaetan, Nunca dejamos de tocar y un día decidimos que teníamos que escoger un nombre y estar en contacto con el negocio de la música, así que grabamos un disco bajo el nombre de TONE REC y lo mandamos a un sello que nos gustaba, y rápidamente nuestro proyecto se convirtio en realidad :) como en un cuento de hadas. Cuando comenzamos a hacer música era por diversión, pero siempre tuvimos la meta de tocar nuestra música por todo el mundo.

3. Como es la escena de la música francesa electrónica mas alla del Daft Punk?

Desde hace poco, no nos sentimos ligados a esa escena francesa (daft punk, modjo, cassius, justice etc.) pero ahora el sonido de Francia es mas áspero y radical, y mas cercano a lo que llevamos haciendo hace un buen tiempo, la audiencia en los clubs es mas abierta a sonidos mas raros,lo que es bueno para nosotros!!

4. Cual es tu instrumento favorito?

Amo mi sampler SP404 es muy fácil de usar en vivo y tiene muchas posibilidades. pero nuestro instrumento principal es la laptop y la hemos estado usando desde el principio, Gaetan ama los teclados, tiene una hermosa colección, pero en vivo lo que utiliza mas es el Microkorg que es muy ligero y conveniente

5. Como es el proceso para crear una canción en dat politics?

Al principio puede ser un beat, una frase o un sample que alguno de nosotros quiere usar, y todos nos juntamos en el estudio enfrente de una computadora principal y damos nuestras ideas o puntos de vista.. pero ahora pasamos mas tiempo con cada track. Nuestro primer disco "Tracto Flirt" fue hecho en solo una semana.. No podemos imaginarnos ahora trabajando en un periodo tan corto de tiempo, especialmente cuando eres parte de una banda de tres integrantes, hay mucha discusión y un track puede tener muchas versiones antes del corte final.

6. Que fue lo que les dejo como experiencia Tone Rec y haber sido parte del sello de Bélgica Sub Rosa?

Con Tone Rec tuvimos que tocar en vivo y adaptarnos en el escenario, tocamos en el festival Sonar de 1999, pero no hicimos demasiadas presentaciones por que aun éramos estudiantes, así que el experimento fue mas el proceso de grabar un álbum y estar mas en contacto en un sello discográfico con otros músicos: pasar del estatus de banda de garage a profesionales.
Comenzamos a tocar en vivo por todo el mundo con DAT politics y decidimos abandonar la universidad y enfocarnos en la música.

7. Malcom Mclaren alguna vez menciono para Wired que el futuro de la música estaba en la chip music o 8 bit music, que opinan de esto y de la música hecha a base de instrumentos no convencionales como gameboys y nintendos?

El tiene razón en algunas cosas, si te puedes dar cuenta, los sonidos de 8 bits son usados por muchos productores en la música pop, pero esto no es aun parte de la corriente principal.. a la gente aun le gustan las bandas de rock.
A nosotros nos gustan esos sonidos también, pero no somos totalmente 8 bits, nos gusta enfrentarnos con otro tipo de sonidos como análogos, acústicos o digitales, Hicimos una canción llamada nanoloop para una compilación en la que cada track tenia que hacerse con un cartucho de Gameboy, eso fue divertido, pero no utilizamos el Gameboy en el escenario.

8. Que es lo que esperan de la audiencia de México?

Tengo la sensación de que la audiencia en México es muy cálida, así que esperamos que disfruten la música y bailen y canten con nosotros.

9. Que podemos esperar nosotros como público de este concierto?

Regularmente la gente dice que nuestras presentaciones en vivo son muy energéticas, es un show en vivo, cantamos y tocamos samplers y teclados, es como un show de rock con un avío digital.

10. Que es lo que mas recuerdan de haber trabajado con personas como Kevin Blechdom, Matmos y Kid 606?

La atmósfera era muy parecida a una fiesta, ellos nos visitaban cuando grabábamos Plugs Plus y escuchaban nuestros tracks, les gustaron y estaban entusiasmados de ser parte de estos, grabamos las vocales en algunos esqueletos de canciones e hicimos la producción por nosotros mismos cuando se iban, solo escucharon el resultado final cuando estaba terminado.

11. Que significa el nombre de su sello discográfico Ski-pp?

Skipp viene de la instrucción en DAT o CD cuando quieres adelantar al siguiente track, también significa brincar, cuando creamos el sitio, el punto com para Skipp ya estaba ocupado así que simplemente añadimos un guión.. Pero el nombre real es Skipp, creo que realmente se ajusta a la música que hemos publicado en ese sello ;)

12. Que opinan de la distribución de música a través de computadoras?

Vimos crecer este fenómeno desde adentro, aun recordamos el estar haciendo música bajo el nombre de Tone Rec cuando escuchamos acerca del MP3, en esa época no mucha gente utilizaba computadoras para hacer música e incluso comunicarse vía e-mail era algo raro para algunas personas, esta bien por que es muy fácil escuchar y descubrir nuevo material y también regresar a los clásicos.

Pero realmente no ayuda a los músicos a vivir de su música en términos de ventas. Solo la promoción agresiva puede vender discos y los artistas necesitan tener un apoyo real de sus compañías disqueras, aunque Myspace es bueno, por que estas en contacto con tu audiencia y la mayoría de los artistas realmente revisan personalmente su sitio.

13. Han estado tocando en muchas ciudades del mundo, hay alguna ciudad que realmente amen?

En muchas ciudades tenemos buena audiencia, pero amamos tocar en Austin Texas, Aarhus Dinamarca y en Tokyo Japon donde tenemos una base sólida de fans desde el principio, es donde las reacciones siempre han sido las mas extremas.

14. Que computadoras prefieren usar a la hora de componer una canción. mac o pc?

Antes utilizábamos mucho la PC por que la mayoría de nuestro software era inexistente para mac, ahora el software que usamos ha sido diseñado para los dos tipos de computadora así que ahora sabemos como usar las dos, pero ahora estamos comprando mas apple por que son muy solidas y mas fáciles de abrir y reparar.

15. Que opinan acerca de la reacción que tiene su música sobre los niños pequeños?

Si, vimos ese video en youtube, es muy gracioso verlo!! Tenemos sobrinos y siempre vemos reacciones entusiastas de ellos hacia nuestra música, diferentes a las de sus padres, ellos inmediatamente saben como entender y reaccionar nuestra música, sucede que algunas veces alguien lleva niños a nuestros shows, durante festivales por ejemplo, y ellos son los que realmente rockean el lugar, desde hace años nuestra audiencia es joven, no niños, pero adolescentes y eso es genial, en Estados Unidos siempre nos preocupamos por que los shows sean para todo público.

16. Sus canciones están llenas de energía, que disfrutan mas, el proceso creativo o tocar en vivo?

Es cool hacer música en el estudio, pero para mi lo mejor es tocar enfrente del público y analizar su reacción. esa sensación de estar en el escenario es única y cuando ves a esa gente disfrutando algo que tu hiciste es bueno para el ego :)

17. La música electrónica tiende a encasillarse rápidamente, afortunadamente este no es el caso de DAT politics, a que creen que se deba esto?

Si, nuestra música nunca ha sido fácil de clasificar, por que esta entre diferentes tipos o estilos de música en medio del pop y la música mas "experimental", Esta mezcla es ahora mas aceptada por los medios y la audiencia.

Recientemente estábamos bromeando acerca de esto y estábamos pensando en que nuestras raíces universitarias probablemente eran la razón por la que somos mas complicados y y no completamente "pop"...

18. Quien diseña las portadas de sus discos y las proyecciones de sus conciertos?

Gaetan y yo (Claude) hacemos el diseño que es animado por Vincent, usamos visuales en el escenario que son mas como efectos de iluminación o un wallpaper

19. Hay algo especial o raro que les haya sucedido en alguna de sus presentaciones?

Si, tenemos muchos ejemplos, pero lo mas memorable fue en España, era nuestra primera presentación de la gira Wow Twist, la electricidad se fue y nada funcionaba incluyendo las luces, asi que en la obscuridad Gaetan comenzó a cantar Turn my brain off acapella, y toda la audiencia comenzó a aplaudir y cantar!!, fue muy extarño por que el álbum tenia muy poco de estar en las calles y todo mundo conocía la cancion!! esto es lo bueno acerca de la distribución por internet, no existen mas razones para no conocer nuestra música!

20. La mayoría de sus canciones están en ingles, por que utilizan este lenguaje a la hora de componer?

Hemos estado cantando canciones en frances como en los viejos tiempos. Es una clase de cliché pero el lenguaje ingles siempre se adapta mas a la música pop y en Francia crecimos con la cultura americana en la radio o en la televisión , mucha gente entiende ingles por todo el mundo y queremos hacer música que pueda viajar a través de las fronteras.

21. DAT politics desde mi punto de vista es una mezcla de demasiadas cosas, pueden mencionar algunos grupos/ artistas que los hayan influenciado?

23. Que piensan cuando escuchan la frase The City Loves You?

Nos imaginamos una ciudad llena de posibilidades, en la que nunca te sientes solo o perdido.

1 Is this your first time in Mexico?

Yes, we almost came in Mexico last year at the Sonorama festival, but the show had to be cancelled at the last minute because of organization troubles. We were as much disappointed as the audience.... So we're very happy to be able to make now.

2 How did you met each other?

We met in high School ! Gaetan and Vincent were in the same School and i met Gaetan at a party ! we became buddies and we start to hang out and play music together. We went to university in different towns but we always continued to play music together every week end in Gaetan' garage. We never stop playing music and one day we decided that we have to give ourselves a name and be in touch with music business, so we recorded an album under the name of Tone Rec and sent it to a label which we liked and very quickly we had the project coming true :) like in a fairytale.
When we started to do music it was for fun but we always had this goal to play our music all over the world...

3- How is the french music scene apart from Daft Punk or Justice?

Since recently, we were not feeling like having many links with the french touch thing, but now the sound in France is more rough and radical, and closer to what we do for a long time.
The club audience is more open to weird electronic sound, which is good for us !!

4 Your favorite instrument?

I love my sampler SP404 very easy to use live and with a lot of possibilities. But our main instrument is the laptop and we've been using them from the beginning. Gaetan loves keyboards, he has a nice collection of them, but live he mostly use the Microkorg which is very light and convenient.

5 How's the process to create a Dat Politics song?

At the beginning it can be a beat, or a sentence or a sample that one of us want to use. And we all meet in studio in front of one main computer and we bring ideas or point of view... but we spend more time now on each track. Or first record "Tracto Flirt" was done in one week... we can't imagine now working in such a short time. Especially when you're a threesome band. There are a lot of discussions and a track can have many versions before ending to the final cut.

6 What experiences left you Tone Rec and had been part of the Belgic label Sub Rosa?

With Tone Rec we've been confronted to play live and to find our own way to be onstage. We've played at Sonar in 1999 but we didn't do so many gigs cause we were still student.
So the experiment was more in the process of recording an album, be in touch with a label meet other musicians : pass from the real garage band status to the professionnal one.
We really immediately start to play live all around the world with DAT politics and then we decided to quit university and focus on music

7 Malcom Mclaren said one time for Wired that the future of music was in chip music or 8 bit music, what do you think about this and about the music done with non tipical instruments like gameboys or nintendos?

He was partly right, as you can hear now, 8bits sounds are used by many producers into pop music. But this is not the most mainstream sound either .... People still like rock bands as well.
We like those sounds too, but we're not totally 8bits, we like to confront it to other type of sounds like analogic, acoustic or digital. We've done a track once for a compilation called nanoloop on which each track had to be done using a gameboy cartridge. That was fun to do, but we're not using gameboy onstage.

8 What do you expect from the Mexican audience?

I have the feeling that the audience in Mexico is very warm, so we expect them to enjoy the music and dance :) and sing along.

9 What can we expect as the public of your concert?

Usually people say that our live act is very energetic, it's a live show, we sing and play keyboard and sampler. It looks like a rock show with digital accoutrement.

10 What do you most remember about worked with peole like Kevin Blechdom, Matmos y Kid 606?

The atmosphere was very party like. They were visiting when we were recording Plugs Plus and they did listen to our tracks, they liked them and were very enthusiastic to be part of it. We did record their vocals that they sung on some kind and squeletton tracks. And we did all the production by ourselves when they were gone. They only heard the product when it was finished.

11 Whats means the name of your label Ski-pp?

Skipp come from the inscription on DAT or CD player when you wanna forward to the next track. It means jump as well.
When we created the website the .com for skipp was already taken so we just add a minus... But the real name is Skipp.
I think it really fit to the music we've been releasing on the label ;)

12 What do you think about the new way of music distribution made through computers?

We saw the phenomenom grew up from inside, we remember we were still making music under the name of Tone Rec when we heard about MP3. At the time not so many people were using computer to play music and even communicate by email seemed to be weird for a lot of people. It's good in a way cause it's really easy to listen to music and discover new stuffs and also get back to old classics.

But it doesn't really help the musicians to live with their music in terms of record sells. Only aggressiv promotion can sell records. And artists need to have a real support from their label. Myspace is good though, because you're straight in touch with your audience and most of the musicians really check personaly their site.

13 You have been playing in a lot of cities in the World. Is there any city that you really love?

In many cities we usually have good audience. But we love to play in Austin (Tx) Aarhus (dk) and Tokyo (jp) where we have a solid fanbase since the beginning. It's were the reactions has always been the most extreme.

14 What computer do you prefer while the process of doing your music? PC or Mac?

Before we were mostly using PC cause our main software was not existing for Mac. Nowdays the software we use are developped for both type of computer so we know how to use both of them. But we're more buying apple cause they are very solid and easy to open and repair.

15 What do you think about the reaction on kids when they listen to your music?

Yes we saw that video on Youtube, that was very fun to watch !!
We have nephews and nieces and we always seen very enthusiatic reaction from them about our music. Unlike their parents they immediately know how to react on our music and understand it. It happened sometimes that some people were bringing their kids at our show- during festival for instance- and they were the one who were rocking the place.For several year now our audience is kind of young, not kids but teenagers and that's very great. So in the USA for example we always have to take care that the show is an all ages one.

16 Your songs are full of energy, what do you enjoy the most? the production process or playing live?

This is cool to make music in studio but for me the best is to play them in front of the public and analize their reaction. This sensation of being on stage is so unique and when you see that people enjoying something you've done in your homestudio, that's so good for the ego :)

17 Electronic music is quickly classified, fortunatly it's not your case, for you what is the cause of that?

Yes our music never been easy to classify, because it's in the between of different type or style of music. In between pop music and more "experimental" music. The cross over is now more accepted by the media and the audience.
We were joking about this recently and we were thinking that our artistic university roots were probably the reason why we were complicated and not completely "pop"...

18 Who is designing the cover of your discs and your concert's visual?

Gaetan and me (claude) are doing the graphic design which is animated by Vincent. We use some visuals on stage which are more like a lightning/wall paper effect.

19 Did something special or strange happened to you during one of your shows?

Yes we have many example, but the most memorable one was in Spain. It was the first show of the Wow Twist tour. The power went down and nothing was working of course even the lights, so in the dark gaetan start to singTurn my Brain off a capella and the whole audience start to clap their hand and sing along. That was so strange cause the album was out from a very short time and everyone already knew the song !! this is the good think about distribution through internet, there is no reason not to know our music anymore :) !!!

20 The majority of your songs lyrics are in english, why are using this language when you compose?

We been singing few tracks in French back in the days as well.
That's a kind of cliche but English language always fit better to pop music and in france we grew up with the american culture on the radio or on TV. A lot of people understand english all over the world and we wanted to play music which could travel through the borders.

21 From my point of view, Dat politics is a mix of lots of things, could you mentioned a few of your influences?
